Home and Office Visits

When you contact me for a consultation I will send you two forms, a Health History and a Consent to Care form.  You may complete them prior to our meeting. At the meeting we will review your goals, concerns, and pertinent health history.  I will observe a feeding to assess latch and milk transfer. I'll complete an oral assessment of the baby as well as a breast assessment. From these assessments and observations I will create a written care plan to address any concerns and challenges you have raised and to assist you in avoiding common difficulties in the days ahead.
Follow up appointments, if necessary, will be scheduled and included in the care plan. Consultations last approximately one and a half to two hours and can be held in your home or in one of my office locations (Hamilton or Wakefield).

When to See a Lactation Consultant
Consider how a lactation consultation at any of the milestone moments below would support your breastfeeding goals and use the contact form at the bottom of the page to schedule an appointment.

Prenatal Consultation - Meet your concerns head on by scheduling an appointment before you deliver. We will review your individual situation and tailor an action plan to optimize breastfeeding and prevent challenges from interfering with nurturing your baby as you would like. Whether you are anticipating birth interventions or work related challenges, are concerned about your breasts or a previous breastfeeding experience or just have a thousand questions let's meet to create a game plan that will work for you and your baby. This is especially important for women who have had breast surgery, are expecting multiples, an early delivery or don't have family members or friends who have nursed.

First Days Home Consultation – A home or office visit on day 3, 4 or 5 can answer your questions, provide strategies for reducing engorgement and achieving an effective latch and provide reassurance about milk production and weight gain. In this visit I will answer questions and address concerns that mothers or family members may have, and assess latch, milk transfer and mother’s comfort and provide strategies for maximizing milk making capacity during these early weeks.

"Something's Not Right" Consultation – Schedule an appointment any time you have discomfort, concern about milk supply, need to supplement or are facing a new circumstance such as a health problem for you or your baby, or have questions beyond the realm of your support resources. Consultations can generally be scheduled in 24-48 hours with night and weekend times available.

Return to Work Consultation - Maintaining breastfeeding once you return to work is a new situation to master, often not long after you have mastered breastfeeding itself. And the range of work circumstances is as varied as the jobs new mothers hold. A consultation will provide you with an opportunity to develop a personalized game plan for meeting your baby's needs, maintaining milk production while working and caring for yourself.  Use of pumps, infant feeding equipment, and dealing with work schedules and supervisors can also be included in planning.
